TeXLive (>= 2011) already uses "updmap-sys" for Japanese font
configuration. Thus fonts-japanese-* will be not needed if TeXLive
packages are updated.

AFAIK, fonts-japanese-* is currently needed about ghostscript[1]. The
ghostscript's fontconfig support is very limited. So the
"gs-cjk-resource" package provides templates about Fontmap/cidfmap and
update script.

How to handle Fontmap/cidfmap, especially aliases?

In Japanese:
TeXLive(>= 2011) が入れば, updmap-sys でフォント実ファイルを指定して切り替え
るようになるので, fonts-japanese-* は不要でしょう.

Squeeze 以降で用いられている Ghostscript のフォント指定はどうしましょうね.
