いろいろ助けてもらって debian@orgのBTS #44134 にGimp-1.0 の日本語menu化の
要望を出し。その後も、GtkConvや他のパッチ作者の方とかGTK-ML(ja)で相談した
り、GimpやGTK本家のMLを覗いたりしておりました。

メンテナーのBen Gertzfieldさんが #44134をgimp-developer-MLに投稿してくれ
たようですが、そこでは、パッチ付のメールをMLに投稿するなとか、いいじゃな
いかとかいった反応しか無いようでした。

GtkConvの作者さんの過去の試みでは、gettextと同じ機能を提供するGtkConvを
GTK-1.2が取り入れる可能性は極めて低いとのこと。そこで、同氏とも相談し、
GTK-1.0.6へのGtkConv取り込みと、Gimp-1.0をGTK-1.0.6でコンパイルしてもら
えないかを、debianに相談してみることにしました。

で、メンテナーのBen Gertzfieldさんに以下のメールで相談してみました。
英訳はカミさんのお父様に頼みました(笑)。

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your quick action to GIMP developers about #44134 that 
I submit to BTS of Debian.

But I am afraid that Gimp and GTK developers may not be interested in 
taking GtkConv I sent into GTK-1.2. Because GTK already supported gettext 
and GtkConv provides the same function to GTK so that they, the developers 
of GIMP and GTK will not recognize necessity of adding the additional 
GtkConv to GTK.

And in addition, by gettext, Japanese Menu display is readily available in 
GIMP-1.1 which will lead to my worry that they would not hope to modify 
GTK-1.2 for only supporting Japanese Menu on GIMP-1.0. 

Yes, they might say.... Wait until GIMP-1.2 release!!

Anyway, I don't change but stick to my wishes that GIMP-1.0 should support 
Japanese Menu.

If we Japanese users, have been disappointed in the fact that Japanese Menu 
can not be available on GIMP-1.0 for long long time until GIMP-1.2 (with 
Japanese Menu) packages is included in Debian, the Debian must be delayed 
in spreading over Japan.

With respect to another Linux distributions in Japan, most of them include 
GIMP-1.0 that supports Japanese Menu by merging some patches. Many people 
are interested in Linux in Japan, and many of them are interested in the 
GIMP. However they will not choose Debian because Debian's GIMP-1.0 package 
does not support Japanese Menu.

If it is too troublesome to merge GtkConv into GTK-1.2 original or Debian's 
GTK-1.2 package, please listen to my following idea as an alternative:

Debian's GIMP-1.0 package depends on GTK-1.2 package. Will you change this 
dependency to GTK-1.0.6 ?  For I have gtkconv.patch for GTK-1.0.6 source 
and please take this patch to GTK-1.0.6 into consideration.

I'm sorry for my sending this mail to you directly. Please forgive me 
if this disturbed you very much. I don't want to submit those NEW wishes 
to BTS before I get your advice.

I believe, you hope Debian's world wide popularization, so do I.

This won't work, because GIMP 1.0.8 (the latest version) requires
GTK+ 1.2 to work..

It's not a problem. Since I use the Japanese environment in X very
often (I use canna with xemacs and with Netscape) I understand
how frustrating it is when an application doesn't have proper
Japanese support!

However, I don't know how best to solve this problem. If I put in
your patch, it will most likely break something somewhere else -- 
and then Debian will get in trouble for not using the "proper"
upstream version of a package (like GTK+ 1.2.)

日本語メニュー化のGtkConvは、GTK-1.2に当てないとダメみたいです。
メインテナーさんは、各アプリケーションの日本語対応の要求には理解が
ある感じですが、GTKへのGtkConvの取り込みによって何か弊害が起きる
ことを懸念している様子です。

さて、どうしたものか。-ja みたいに別パッケージにするしかないのか
もしれません。

質問というよりは、報告といった感じになりましたが、何かアドバイス
あればお願い致します。

なお、日本語入力を可能にするパッチの方は、他のパッチ作者等とも
相談中だったりで、まだBTSには要望してません。
