これは 5.1 ベースで gs-cjk を試してみたという話ですね。

香田さんのほうで、武さんの gs_5.10-11.5defoma1.diff.gz を
 VFlib パッチ抜きの gs 5.50 に当ててみて検証することは
可能ですか ?

あと、最新の vflib2 2.25.1-12.1 を眺めてみましたが、
たぶん debian/rules を

として --with-freetype と --with-freetype-includedir= を
 ./configure で指定しないようにすれば freetype support 無しの
 vflib2 ができるはずなので、これとリンクした 5.50 ベースの gs-ja を
作って experimental にでも upload してもらえませんか ?

というか freetype support ありの vflib2 を vflib2-freetype として、
かつ freetype とリンクしない vflib2 を vflib2 として生成するように
 debian/control, debian/rules などを変更したほうがいいかも。

 vflib2 (with freetype support) と vflib2-nofreetype の 2 つを
用意するというのでもいいんですが、vflib2 の INSTALL によると

   *NOTE* By default, VFlib is compiled not to use TrueType driver using
   FreeType. To compile VFlib to enable this features, run configure 
   program with the following long options, for example. Probably, most 
   users do this. (The same shell script is 'run-conf'.)

っと書かれていて、デフォルトでは FreeType を使った TrueType driver を
使わないようになっているらしいので、デフォルトな構成のほうが vflib2 で
オプションとして freetype サポートを有効にしたパッケージが vflib2-freetype
かなという気がしないでもないかと。

 ghostscript 6.0 が GPL 化されるタイミングと woody freeze のタイミング
次第ですが、woody の gs が 5.5 ベースで行くようなら gs-cjk 5.5 が
使えるかどうかの検証をして、もしそれがダメなら woody の gs は
 freetype support 無しの vflib2 とリンクしたものとしてリリースするしか
無いかなという気がしてます。

 gs-aladdin のほうは 6.5 になるにしろ 7.0 になるにしろ、gs-cjk 一本で
いいと思いますが、main の gs はどうも 5.x 系が 5.5 でも原因不明の
 core dump とかいろいろ 6.0 で解消された bug があるらしいので、
 gs+vflib (no-freetype) なパッケージを出す準備をしておいたほうが
良いと思います。
