識者ではないので単なる想像ですが

 virtual hosting -> メインの IP アドレスと異なる IP アドレスでのサービス
 range hosting -> ある特定範囲の (複数の) IP アドレスに対してサービス
                    (どれがメインでどれがヴァーチャルとか決められない)

ってことなのかな ?

 linux-2.4.0-test12 の Documentation/Configure.help を見ると

  The kHTTPd is experimental. Be careful when using it on a production
  machine. Also note that kHTTPd doesn't support virtual servers yet.

と書いてありますね。
標準カーネルでは khttpd での virtual hosting はまだできないらしい。
