初めての投稿です。不備がありましたら御指摘下さい。
X Window Systemの設定に関する質問です。
Intel i740 AGP VRAM=8MBというVideo Cardを使おうとして
つまづきました。
一般userにてXを起動しようとすると、

$ startx

上記のMessageが表示されて起動できませんでした。
rootでは問題なく起動できました。
解決方法あるいはヒントを教示頂ければ幸いです。
以下は行った作業です。
あらき様のWeb pageで検索して、redhatが提供している
XBF_i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm
を使えば良いとの知見を得ました。
ftp.jaist.ac.jp
にて、
XBF_i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm
xf86config-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.tgz
を入手しました。
# alien XBF_i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm
にてdeb形式に変換し、
# dpkg -i xbf-i740-glibc_1.0.0-2.i386.deb
としてinstallしました。
このとき、XBF_i740のpermissionは、
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Mar 10 19:01 X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XBF_i740*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2129308 Dec 20 10:12 XBF_i740*
となっています。
root directoryにてxf86config-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.tgz
を展開して、
/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Cards
を上書きしました。
# xf86config
にて設定を行い、rootでXを起動した場合は、設定した
1280x1024(24bpp)で表示することが出来ました。

これまではS3ViRGE DXをxserver-xtt-svgaで使っていましたが、
purgeしました。
