まず、/usr/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias を上のように書き換えたところ
うまく立ち上がりました。
libgnome32 を 1.0.42-0.1 に上げて、locale.alias を元に戻して
もうまくいきました。
僕のところの sources.list では www.debian.org を見に行くようになって
いて、libgnome32 が 1.0.40-0.1 しかなかったのですが、
www.debian.or.jp のは 1.0.42-0.1 になっていました。
ただ、sources.list を www.debian.or.jp に書き直して
apt-get update すると

ということになってしまうので、libgnome32 と、それに関係するファイルを
取ってきてから dpkg でインストールしました。
結果、 dpkg --list "*gnome*" |grep ii は以下のようになりました。
