むむ。そうなんですか。
その後、gdb から起動してチェックもしてみましたが、手がかりが得られません。

また、/usr/share/emacs/21.3/etc/DEBUG というファイル内に
"** If you encounter X protocol errors" というセクションを発見しました。
そこにかかれてある通り、
~$ emacs -xrm "emacs.synchronous: true"
として起動してから問題の処理を行なうと、今度は以下のメッセージを
残してクラッシュします。

~$ emacs -xrm "emacs.synchronous: true"
X protocol error: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) on protocol request 1
