[debian-users:47691] Etchのコンソールでの日本語表示

Etchのコンソール(X無し、直接)でのUTF-8を使用した日本語表示について質問が
あります。
現状のEtchで上記環境で日本語を出す事は可能なのでしょうか?
とりあえずそのままman manしたところ、日本語らしきところが
■のオンパレードとなりました。
jfbtermをsargeのときと同様に起動しようとしたところ、
下記のエラーがでて起動に失敗します。
#エラー全文は後述(jfbterm.log)
exec : /bin/bash Oops: Unknown frame buffer ???
起動時の書式は以下のように数点試してみましたがエラーメッセージは同様でし
た。
$ jfbterm
$ jfbterm -c utf-8 (http://kfujio.blog78.fc2.com/blog-entry-1.html)
$ jfbterm -q -c other,EUC-JP,iconv,UTF-8 (http://lists.debian.or.jp/debian-users/200410/msg00010.html)

を見てみましたが生のコンソールを使う場合についてはあまり記述が有りません
でした。
武藤さんの作られた(Sarge用の?)jconsolewrapperも入れてみましたが同様の
エラーメッセージでした。
フレームバッファデバイスが出来ていないのでしょうか?
/dev/fbは有るようですし、vga16fbはモジュールとして組み込まれては
いるようなのですが...
現状としては
生コンソールでは
konしてLANG=ja_JP.eucJP man man
Windows(cygwin)経由では
cocot -p UTF-8 ssh username@hostname
したら日本語が出たのでそんなに困っているわけではないのですが...
ご存じの方がいたら教えて下さい。
環境
VMwareWorkstation5.5.2 (VMwaretoolsはインストールしていない)
Etch RC1のインストーラを使用してインストール

インストール後、下記apt-lineを使用して、updateおよびパッケージを導入
