Japanese users でも無いような気がしたので、
all Debian user who needs the support for Japanese environment
all Debian users who want it
(it はその直前の the sufficient Japanese environment)
としてみました。

<H2>Activity in Debian JP Project</H2>
<P>
<A href="http://www.debian.or.jp/">Debian JP Project</A>
is working in various fields to make
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/intro/about#what">Debian, a universal O.S.</A>
developped by
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/">Debian Project</A>,
more & more popular in Japan.
Please refer
<A href="DebianJP.html">About Debian JP Project</A>
for more details.
</P>
<H2>History of "Debian JP Packages"</H2>
<P>
"Debian JP Packages" has been created by
<A href="http://www.debian.or.jp/">Debian JP Project</A>
as a collection of "Add-On" packages for
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/intro/about#what">Debian system</A>.
These series of "JP Packages" (rex-jp, bo-jp, hamm-jp, slink-jp) have
been distributed in various CD-ROMs, each in turn.</P>
<P>
We start it with unofficial release of 'rex-jp' for Debian 1.2 (rex),
then released 'bo-jp' for Debian 1.3/1.3.1 (bo) also unofficially.
After these two unofficial release, we released officially
'hamm-jp' for Debian 2.0 (hamm) and 'slink-jp' for Debian 2.1 (slink)
with the intention to be widely distributed and used by much more users.
In fact, our "official" release got success. 'hamm-jp' have been much more
widely distributed. Many books have been published and is being sold
even now in Japan, including our 'hamm-jp Official CD-ROM set'.
You can see them at
<A href="./CDROM.html">Information about CD-ROM</A>
(sorry, English page is not provided yet).
</P>
<P>
These "Add-On" packges have been distributed by
<A href="http://www.debian.or.jp/">Debian JP Project</A>
for the convenience of all Debian user who needs the support
for Japanese environment, in the case of that
the maintainer of that JP package had not become
<A href="../devel/official-maintainer.html">the official maintainer</A>
(sorry, now written in Japanese only) of
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/">Debian Project</A>
yet, and some other cases.
</P>
<P>
Debian JP Project has created many packages for Debian.
There are some packages which are already contributed to
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/">Debian Project</A>
and incorprated already in official release of
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/intro/about#what">Debian system</A>
such as kon2, kterm, jless, jgroff, skk, canna, wnn, mgp,
and other pacakages which are released in
"Debian JP Packages (Slink-JP) for Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 (Slink)"
by Debian JP Project separately,
such as boot-floppies-ja, bug-ja, gawk-ja, grep-ja, sed-ja, gs-ja,
jtex, kinput2, skkinput, chimera2-ja, lynx-ja.
Total number of these JP packages goes over 250.
</P>
<P>
Recently,
<A href="http://www.debian.or.jp/">Debian JP Project</A>
focuses on contributing the JP Packages to
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/">Debian Project</A>
and to register them as official packages on Debian system
as many as possible, so that
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/Packages/unstable/">potato</A>
release will provide the sufficient Japanese environment for
all Debian users who want it without any 'Add-On' packages
(i.e. potato will not require 'potato-jp'). </P>
<P>
With this integration, users of "JP Packages" does not worry about
the insufficient dependency or the needless conflicts between
"Debian Packages" and "Debian JP Packages". These problems could
not be resolved unless "JP Packages" is contributed to Debian and is
registered as one of "Debian Packages".
<BLOCKQUOTE>
<P>
For example, 'wml' (a Debian package) recommends weblint (>=1.3-1),
and jweblint (a JP package) replaces weblint. if user wish to install
both of wml and jweblint (it is quite reasonable for some people),
he has some difficulties in persuading the dselect.</P>
<P>
(Capital 'Q' forces dselect to do, but it forgets and shows
that problem in each time.)</P>
<P>
There should be some more packages having similar problem.
</P>
</BLOCKQUOTE>
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/intro/about#what">Debian</A>'s
package management system is excellent. We all know about it,
and to maximise the benefit from the usage of this superior system,
we decide to contribute all our JP packages to Debian as soon as possible.</P>
<P>
And our user of "JP Packages" can enjoy the newest release just after
the release by Debian Project without waiting the release of JP Packages
for next release (potato) and after. This is important for many users
who wish to use the most up-to-date softwares.</P>
<P>
Now, the number of
<A href="http://www.debian.or.jp/">Debian JP Project</A>
members who is registered as one of
<A href="../devel/official-maintainer.html">the official maintainers</A>
(sorry, written in Japanese only) of
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/">Debian Project</A>
increase much more, and the number of applicants continues to increase.
The number of JP Packages that is already registered in
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/Packages/unstable/">potato</A>
after the release of 'Slink-JP' also continues to increase.
</P>
<P>
<A href="http://www.debian.or.jp/">Debian JP Project</A>
announced that
<A href="News/index.html#19990525">"We will not release the JP Packages 'officially'"</A>
and
<A href="News/index.html#19990609">"We will concentrate on contribution of JP Packages"</A>
into
<A href="http://www.jp.debian.org/intro/about#what">Debian system</A>.
We hope that this action accelarate the registration of JP Packages into potato,
and make the Debian system to be "working I18N distribution having enough
JP environments in original (without 'Add-On')", more valuable to JP users
in Japan or out of Japan.
</P>
<H2>How to get the Debian JP Packages</H2>
<P>
The most recently released (at 23 Apr. 1999) Debian JP Packages is

<P>
When you find the "maybe bugs" problem related to these packages,
Please check
<A href="Bugs/index.html">the known bug lists</A>
at first, then if no one report the same problem,
Please send

Debian JP Packages for stable main/contrib/nonfree distribution</A>

Packages for the current stable version of Debian

<DT>Main
<DD>All packages are "DFSG Free".
They are freely usable, modifiable and redistributable in
both source and binary form.
It is possible for anyone to distribute and use modified source code
and their own compiled binaries, at least when they do so as part of a
Debian distribution.
<DT>Contrib
<DD>Packages:
<UL>
<LI> whose copyright permission notices (or patent problems) allow only
distribution of compiled binaries (and thus of which only binaries
are available) </LI>
<LI> where the source code which may be distributed is not the complete
source code required to compile the program (ie, the program
cannot be compiled using only packages in the main Debian
distribution) </LI>
<LI> which depend for their use on non-free or contrib packages, or
allow free use only for a trial period (shareware) </LI>
<LI> which are demonstration programs lacking vital functionality (crippleware) </LI>
<LI> which are only installer-packages which require the user to supply a
separate file to be installed </LI>
<LI> which are buggy and no longer maintained, but are preserved for
backward compatibility </LI>
<LI> which fail to meet some other policy requirements </LI>
</UL>
are placed in the semi-supported contrib section
(unless they need to be in non-free).
<DT>Non-Free</DT>
<DD>Packages:
<UL>
<LI>whose copyright permission notices (or patent problems) do not
allow distribution and copying for profit, without restriction on
the amount charged </LI>
<LI> where distribution is restricted according to the medium used </LI>
<LI> where the distributor must ask any kind of special permission of
the authors </LI>
<LI> with other onerous conditions </LI>

are placed in the semi-supported non-free section.
<P>
This is important so that CDROM manufacturers can distribute Debian
without having to check the copyright of each package individually,
simply by leaving out the contents of the non-free area; CDROM distributors
are encouraged, though, to check the copyrights on programs in non-free
individually and include as many as they can.
