まーだソースを見てないのですが ^^;
ということはたぶんデフォルトで ulimit -c 0 なんですね。

「普通」は core 自体からして見る必要はない、ということ
でしょうか。まぁ基本的に危ないモノだし、そうかも。

/etc/limits は login みたいですね。(dpkg -S /etc/limits)

man 5 limits には

It should be owned by root and readable by root account only.

と書いてあるけれど、644 なのは何故?

Also, please note that all limit settings are set PER LOGIN.
They are not global, nor are they permanent. Perhaps global
limits will come, but for now this will have to do ;)

ちょっとよく分からないけど、何だか怪しそうな…。:-(

それから、ちょっと話が変わりますが、
.bash_profile と .bashrc の使い分けは自信ないです。
.bash_profile で .bashrc を source していますし、
同じく .xsession でも .bashrc を source してます。
実は ssh-agent/ssh-add 絡みで .xinitrc も絡んでたりして…。
