すみません、ちょっと間違えていました。
Linux上での /usr/sbin/grub と
boot時のGRUBので動きが違うみたいです。

Linux上での/usr/sbin/grubでやってみたところ、
普段の2GBのハードディスクを付けているマシンではエラーはなかったのですが、
3GB,9GBのハードディスクを付けているマシンでやってみたところ、
そのようなエラーが出てしまいました。

boot時のGRUB Shell上でやってみたら、エラーは出ませんでした。

/dev/hda6のところにvmlinuzをコピーして起動時のGRUBで
TAB補完を使いながら、

grub> kernel (hd0,5)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1
   [Linux-bzImage, setup=0xe00, size=0x82ae0]

grub> boot

でbootできました。

sda5のときの(hd1,?)?の部分は 5 - 1 で(hd1,4)
になるのではないでしょうか？
