"sawfishではなく、gnome-sessionなら" というのがいまいち意味が分からな
いですが、

一般的に、startx や、xdm からのログインで X Window System を使うときは、
ホームディレクトリにある .xsession というファイルが実行されます。
(そのしくみは、/etc/X11/Xsession というファイルを読むと分かります)。

# .xsession が終了すると、startx が終了またはログアウトします。

というわけで、.xsession の最初のほうに、壁紙を設定するコマンドを
書けばいいです。もし .xsession がないのでしたら、作りましょう。
そのときは、user-ja パッケージが参考になると思います。

「最初のほう」というのが具体的にどれくらい最初のほうか、
なにが基準となっているか、については、いろいろ試してみてください。
言葉で説明するのはちょっと難しいので。
(実際には、かなりうしろの方でも大丈夫なことが多いと思います)。

壁紙を設定するコマンドにはどのようなものがあるか、ですが、
user-ja パッケージが生成する .xsession には、xsetroot が
(コメントアウトした状態ですが) 例示されています。ほかにも
いろいろあります。たとえば、

apt-cache search 'root window'

とやってみると、

xplanet - render images of the earth
xphoon - sets the root window to a picture of the moon
xsnow - Brings Christmas to your desktop
xbmbrowser - Browser for Pixmaps and Bitmaps
xscreensaver - Automatic screensaver for X
rt - Displays select log files in the X root window.
xearth-ja - Sets the X root window to an image of the Earth.
chameleon - Application for putting pictures or color in the root window
xearth - Show a rotating earth on your X root window
unclutter - hides the mouse in X after a period of inactivity
xloadimage - Graphics file viewer under X11
xmountains - fractal landscape generator for X
xeyes+ - Another Follow the Mouse X demo
xoj - O.J. Simpson emulator -- root window demo.
fvwm-common - Files shared between the fvwm, fvwm1 and fvwm95 packages
xtartan - Display Scottish tartans
floatbg - slowly modify the color of the X root window
xroach - infests X with disgusting cockroaches

と出てきます (potato の場合)。これらのパッケージを試して
みるのもいいでしょう (ただし、このリストの中には、求めるもの
とは違うものもありますので注意してください)。
