似たようなことがありました。
kernel-image-2.5.2-pentiumiii-smpをインストールしたんですが

:> devfs:boot_option:0x2
:> request_module[block-major_22]:Root fs not mounted
:> VFS:cannot open root device "1601" or 16:01
:> Please  append acorrect "root=" boot option
:> Kernel panic : VFS :unable to mount root fs on 16:01

確かおんなじことが起った気がします。
パッケージインストール時にinitrdパラメータがどうとかいうメッセージがあっ
たのでlilo.confを見たらinitrd=が無かったので追加して上手く動きました。

うちのlilo.confはこんな感じです。
boot=/dev/sda1
root=/dev/sda1
