別のマシンに転送し、そこから　件名を手動で触りMLしましたので、スレッドがつながらないかもしれません、すみません。
さて、問題のマシンで　# find / -name update-alterenatives　をすると
find: WARNING: Hard link count is wrong for /proc/1/task: this may be a bug in your filesystem driver.  Automatically turning on find's -noleaf option. 
 Earlier results may have failed to include directories that should have been searched.
ですので  sargeから sidに上げるとき躓いたようです。

sidをjigdo-file ?で得るのは　知識がたりないのでできません。
それで　sidの iso image　（debian-20050613-i386-binary-1.iso）をダウンロードして 最初からsidをインストールに方針を変えました。
エンドレスな失敗に終止符が打てると思います、重ねてありがとうございました。
