AFAIK CID fonts are obsolete in X.org, yes. But they are needed for TeX
and ghostscript, because ghostscript cannot deal with the OTF format yet.
The question now is if x-ttcidfont-conf is supposed to only configure
fonts for X usage, or system wide, which includes ghostscript. If the
former one, we can safely remove the CID related stuff... for the latter
one, it needs a general overhaul, together with the gsfonts and possibly
other related packages.
Unfortunately the whole CID handing process in debian relies on the
Adobe CMAPs and presumes that every CID font uses one of those CMAPs.
This should be changed as CID fonts can bring their own CMAP files and,
more importantly, multiple CMAP files (because that's what CID is all
about!). However, there seems to be no sane way to install such files
into the system and make them work system wide.
So, if anyone has a deeper knowledge about this topic, please contact me
and then we can discuss how this should be handled.
