自己レスです。

etchnhalfはインストーラのkernelが2.6.26なのに、インストールされる
kernelが2.6.24なのが原因とのことで、

deb http://www.backports.org/debian etch-backports main contrib non-free 
をsources.listに書き加えて、

linux-image-2.6.26-bpo.1-686

をインストールすることで解決しました。

ただし、sources.listに
deb http://www.backports.org/debian etch-backports main contrib non-free 
を加えて、apt-get updateを実行すると、NO_PUBKEY ...という警告が
出てしまうので、

wget -O - http://backports.org/debian/archive.key | apt-key add - 

を実行しました。
