山下です。

以下、unstable の xdg-open (xdg-utils 1.0.2+cvs20100307-1) で
の話になりますが、大きく変わらないものだと思います。


file /usr/bin/xdg-open してみれば分かりますが、中身は shell
script です。何をやっているか簡単に言ってしまえば、 gnome や
kde、distro 等、環境毎にあるファイルハンドラの呼び出しです。

つまり xdg-open はラッパにすぎません。


>  $ xdg-open ./aa
>  Warning: unknown mime-type for "./aa" -- using "application/octet-stream"
>  Error: no "view" mailcap rules found for type "application/octet-stream"

上記を踏まえて、このメッセージを出している実体は
/usr/bin/run-mailcap です。お手元で xdg-open を run-mailcap
に変えて試してみれば全く同じメッセージが出るはずです。

ここで run-mailcap の manpage を紐解いてみると、上の記述があ
るので仕様だと分かります。

どのように回避したいのか分かりませんが、
以下の様なこともできなくはないようです。

$ echo "application/octet-stream; sensible-editor '%s'" >>~/.mailcap

これは xdg-open ではなく run-mailcap 用のものなので、実行環境
が変われば別の対処が必要になるでしょう。
