/etc/passwd /etc/group ともにエントリが存在していませんでした。
該当のエントリを追加することで postgres のエラーで upgrade が中断することは
なくなりました。
該当エントリがどうしてなくなったかは不明です。
＃やるのは自分しかいないはずなんで、自分のせいなんでしょうけど

で、現在

Starting PostgreSQL 8.3 database server: mainThe PostgreSQL server failed to start. Please check the log output: 2010-07-05 18:53:57 JST FATAL: could not access private key file "server.key": Permission denied failed!
 failed!

といった状態になっています。server.key は以下のようになっています。

# ls -l /var/lib/postgresql/8.3/main/server.key
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 Apr  6 01:17 /var/lib/postgresql/8.3/main/server.key -> /etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key

# ls -l /etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key
-rw-r----- 1 postgres postgres 887 Nov 23  2008 /etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key

問題ないように思えるのですが。
