# Removal: Old libs, HAL, defoma
<p>
Luk Claes proposed (amongst other ideas) continuing the <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2011/03/msg00492.html";>\
removal of obsolete libraries</a>. Josselin Mouette suggested <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2011/03/msg00493.html";>\
starting</a> with <a href="http://packages.debian.org/src:hal";>HAL</a> and
<code><a href="http://packages.debian.org/src:gnome-vfs";>gnome-vfs</a></code>.
Although there has been some progress towards getting rid of HAL (still used by
<code><a href="http://packages.debian.org/xserver-xorg";>xserver-xorg</a></code>
on kFreeBSD), Cyril Brulebois pointed out that <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/03/msg01194.html";>\
this effort is stalled for now</a>.
Christian Perrier also proposed to <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/03/msg01166.html";>\
drop </a><code><a href="http://packages.debian.org/defoma";>defoma</a></code>.

# NM as Default (next: libreoffice-writer as standard text editor)
<p>
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/03/msg01146.html";>\
Limitations</a> in <code><a href="http://packages.debian.org/ifupdown";>ifupdown</a></code>
led to calls for an
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/03/msg01167.html";>\
overhaul</a> of Debian's default network management infrastructure.
<code><a
href="http://packages.debian.org/network-manager";>network-manager</a></code>
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00041.html";>could
be adopted</a> to this end, though this proposal has provoked a great many
objections, whether
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00051.html";>\
rational</a> or <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00120.html";>\
less so</a>.

# Other Release Goals
<p>
Among other <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/03/msg01136.html";>\
release goal proposals</a> (such as read-only root file system and
C.UTF-8 provided by default), Roger Leigh started a <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/03/msg01118.html";>\
discussion about supporting <code>/run</code> for <q>Wheezy</q></a>.</p>

Stefano Zacchiroli proposed <a
href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2011/03/msg00510.html";>\
some further release goals</a> relating to package quality, and relaunched the
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2011/04/msg00091.html";>\
time based freezes</a> proposal.  He argued that fixed freeze dates would
allow Debian's developer base to improve planning and coordination with
upstream developers, and underlined that the first part of the
<q>Squeeze</q> freeze (blocking library transitions while being lax about
general migration of new packages) was quite successful, and that it
should be done similarly in the future.  While the time frame for such
freezes (and <a href="http://lists.debian.org/20110404070550.GL21476@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx";>how
they should be announced</a>) is still being discussed, there generally seems to be a
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/20110407160009.GA25468@xxxxxxxxxx";>consensus
in favour</a>.
