伊藤です。少しずつ hamm に移行中です.

うちでも同じようなことがあったんですが、いろいろいじっているうちに
立ち上がるようになりました。あまり深く追及してなかったんですが...

どうも、locale-ja パッケージを入れている場合に、
環境変数 LC_* は未定義で、LANG=ja_JP.ujis としたときに落ちるようです。
LANG を他の値に変える(例えば、LANG=ja_JP)と、だいじょうぶだったりします。
とりあえず、export LC_TIME=ja_JP とすると立ち上がります。(何故?)

パッケージのバージョンは、こんな感じです。

ii  mule            2.3-19.34b-13  MULtilingual Enhancement to GNU Emacs Editor
ii  locale-ja       2.1            Locale definition files for Japanese.

うーん、具体的な原因は、全く分からんです。
悪い所は、他にあるのかもしれません。
