Slackware や RedHat では標準で MBR に LILO の
1st boot sector をインストールする方法になるようですが、
Debian の標準では ( bo も hamm も) MBR に LILO の
1st boot sector をインストール「しません」。

Debian の場合、"Create Master Boot Record?" という質問に yes と
答えると /boot/mbr.b という 444 bytes のファイルが書き込まれます。
これは extIPL に似たブートマネージャです。ただしハードウェアに
よってはこの mbr.b がうまく機能しない場合があるようです。

実際のインストーラのメッセージは英語版なら
「ハードディスクから起動できるようにするか ? 」の部分は

   If you want the Debian system to boot automatically 
   from the hard disk when you turn your system on, 
   answer "yes" to the following question. 
   If you have another operating system that you'd prefer 
   to be the one that boots automatically, answer "no".
   Boot the Debian system on [root partition device] as the default?

   Make Linux the Default Boot Partition?

であり、「 MBR をインストールするか ? 」の部分は

  A master boot record is required to boot the system.
  If you are already using a boot manager, and want to keep it, 
  answer "no" to the following question. If you don't know 
  what a boot manager is or whether you have one, answer "yes".

  Install a master boot record on [boot device] ?

  Create Master Boot Record?

となっているはずです。

「 MBR に LILO をインストール」という場合、一般的には
 LILO の 1st boot loader を MBR にインストールすることを
意味するので、注意が必要です。

# /usr/sbin/liloconfig を実行しても同様に MBR には /boot/mbr.b を
# 保存してくれます。
