man less 斜め読みして、無いなーと思っていたんですが、
最後の  like clearing the screen で気が付かなきゃ
いかんですね。

画面制御を何でやっているか考えれば、当然のことなんですが、
termcap terminfo の問題になっているとはじめて気が付きました。

というわけで、謎が解けました。ありがとうございます。
