ご助言に従い、(potatoで)下記のコマンドを実行してみましたが、
# apt-get install libgdbmg1-dev

以下のエラーが出てインストール出来ませんでした。(;_;)

Package libgdbmg1-dev has no available version, but exists in the database.
This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and
never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents
of sources.list
However the following packages replace it:
  libc6-dev
E: Package libgdbmg1-dev has no installation candidate

ひょっとしてこのあたりが先の ndbm のエラーの遠因になっているのでしょうか。
