mew の形式って、MH じゃなかったけ。
という推測を前提に。

mutt のマニュアルに以下のような記述があります。

| 4.6 Mailbox Formats
 
|    MH. A radical departure from mbox and MMDF, a mailbox consists of a directory
|    and each message is stored in a separate file. The filename indicates the
|    message number (however, this is may not correspond to the message number Mutt
|    displays). Deleted messages are renamed with a comma (,) prepended to the
|    filename. Note: Mutt detects this type of mailbox by looking for either
|    .mh_sequences or .xmhcache (needed to distinguish normal directories from MH
|    mailboxes). Mutt does not update these files, yet.

mutt は、ディレクトリに.mh_sequences あるいは.xmhcache が存在すると
そのディレクトリをMH フォルダと認識するわけですね。
(上記の"Note:" 以下の部分。)

したがって、あらかじめ、そのディレクトリで、`touch .mh_sequences` と
しておけば、認識してくれるのではないでしょうか。


なお、日本語マニュアルが下記のサイトにあります。
バージョンが違っても参考にはなると思います。
