んー、僕の環境とはかなり違いますね。こちらは、Sargeリリース1年前の
testingからアップグレードしているtestingです。

いろいろやってみました。

$ find /usr/share/locale/ja* -type d
/usr/share/locale/ja
/usr/share/locale/ja/LC_MESSAGES
/usr/share/locale/ja/LC_TIME
$ ls /usr/share/locale/ja
LC_MESSAGES  LC_TIME
$ ls /usr/share/locale/ja/LC_MESSAGES/
GConf2.mo           gettext-runtime.mo      menu-sections.mo
WPrefs.mo           gettext-tools.mo        menu.mo
(略)
$ ls /usr/share/locale/ja/LC_TIME/
coreutils.mo
$ find /usr/share/locale/ja* -name SYS_LC_MESSAGES
$ find /usr/share/locale/ja* -type l
/usr/share/locale/ja/LC_TIME/coreutils.mo
$ ls -l /usr/share/locale/ja/LC_TIME/coreutils.mo
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 2006-09-22 22:58 /usr/share/locale/ja/LC_TIME/coreutils.mo -> ../LC_MESSAGES/coreutils.mo

関係ないものを(一応バックアップを取って)消してみるとか。
