原因を絞り込みました所、 hwclock が正常終了しないことが確認できました。
| hoge# hwclock -D --systohc
| hwclock 2.4c/util-linux-2.10f
| /dev/rtc interface to clock を使います。
| ずれの最終修正は 1969 年以降 961162737 秒時点で行なわれました

| ハードウェアクロックはローカル時刻です
| ハードウェアクロックがローカル時刻を保持しているとみなします
| クロックチックを待っています...
このメッセージの後、終了してくれません。
当該マシンは PentiumIII 500MHz dual です。
カーネルは 2.2.16 で、SMP 対応に make しています。
リセットから数時間は hwclock が正常終了してくれますが、一日程度経過す
ると、上記症状が発生します。
