すみません。全く的はずれのことを書きました。
訂正して書きますと、

以前 apcupsd の upgrade した後、apcupsd FATAL ERROR が出た
時期がありました。その時は、UPSTYPE dumb として、エラーメッセージ
を無くしていました。
今は、UPSTYPE smartups で何も問題なく、動作しています。
（sarge、kernel 2.4.27 です。）
