そもそも、ここで切ってしまったのが勘違いの始まり
だったような気がしてきました。

例えば、これが

      BTS (Debian Bug Tracking System)

      ユーザや開発者から寄せられたバグ報告の詳細を記録する
      Debian バグ追跡システムのこと。 
      詳細は http://www.debian.org/Bugs/ を参照。

になっていれば、「Debian 特有の用語」として何も問題ありませんよね ?

例えば http://www.debian.or.jp/search で BTS をキーワードに
検索してみると

 ・ debian-users-jp-2001: [ BTS: 35 ]
 ・ debian-users-jp-2000: [ BTS: 233 ]
 ・ debian-users-jp-1999: [ BTS: 276 ]
 ・ debian-users-jp-1998: [ BTS: 56 ]

これだけのメールがマッチしてくるわけですが、この中で BTS という
単語を「Debian バグ追跡システム以外の「一般的なバグ追跡システム」
という意味で使っているメールの割合は、おそらくほとんど無いでしょう。

一方、こういう用法、つまり "BTS" = 「Debian バグ追跡システム」
という用法は、Debian 以外ではあまり例を見ないと思います。

他のプロジェクトで BTS という単語を見かけたとすれば、おそらく
単に "bug tracking system" を略して書いてるというだけの意味
ですよね。

 www.namazu.org の ML アーカイブを検索してチェックしてみましたが、
 Namazu Project で BTS を導入したのは、わりと最近 (2000.4 頃) ですね。
 ruby で jitterbug+i18n(kondara-hack) を導入した数ヶ月後に、
良さそうだから同じものを入れましょうということで始まったようです。

過去のメールアーカイブも遡ってみてみましたが、avocado のは
 uuencode された文字列の一部にヒットするだけ、ring のはまったく
ヒットせず、でした。

で、www.ruby-lang.org のほうも見てみましたが、BTS という言葉は
やはり ML 検索でもあまり出てこないみたいですね。
むしろ ruby-talk ML では "bug database" のほうがヒットします。

さらに ruby や namazu で利用された jitterbug の日本語化作業を
行なったらしい Kondara で ML を検索すると、

となります。おそらくここでは「バグ宙太」という Kondara 用語のほうが
さらに多いのではないかと想像してますが、すくなくとも BTS という言葉
より jitterbug のほうが 5 倍から 10倍は普及しているみたいですね。

ついでに Kondara の jitterbug-i18n のページに紹介されていた
 www.h14m.org や JKUG も見てみましたが、h14m で「BTS スタート」の
お知らせを合わせて 3 件、kde.gr.jp に至っては BTS でのヒット無しと
いう結果でした。

面白いのは、jitterbug のオリジナル開発元である samba.anu.edu.au には
 "JitterBug is a web based bug tracking system" とは書いてあっても
 "BTS" という単語は出てこないことです。

 samba 関連の ML を http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/ で検索してみても、
 "bug track" や "jitterbug" ではそこそこヒットするのにたいして、
 "BTS" ではまったくヒットしません。

さらに bugzilla で検索すると

 mozilla.gr.jp では "bugzilla" という言葉のほうがはるかに
普及していることがわかります。

ここで http://www.mozilla.org/bugs/ を見ると
 "Bugzilla is a database for bugs." と書いてあります。
ここからリンクされている http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ には
 "bug tracking system" と書かれているのですが、"BTS" という
記載はありません。

普通、「略す」ことには「頻出する言葉を短かくして書く手間を減らす」
といった意味があると思うのですが、Bugzilla にしろ JitterBug にしろ、
それぞれの名前のほうが出現頻度は高いので、その「もの」の説明のため
にだけ使われる bug tracking system という言葉についてわざわざ略称を
決める必然性は薄いように感じます。

使われるとしても、特定のメールの中で bug tracking system (BTS) と
最初に例示して、そのメールの中だけで使われるといったパターンのほうが
多いように思われます。

いくつかの例を見ると、bug tracking system の他に bug tracking service
とか bug tracker とかいった表現もあるみたいですね。

ここで debian-devel の BTS は、ほとんどが Debian Bug Tracking System を
指していることがタイトルからわかります。

 "ITP: bug-buddy" と "Multivendor BTS," の 2 つが微妙なところ
ですが、GNOME BTS (Eazel のではなく) は Debbugs を使っている
ように見えました。www.kde.org の BTS も Debbugs がベースの
ようですね。

一方最初にヒットしている mutt-dev をさらに詳しく見ると、ここで
使われている BTS は guug.org にありますが、debbugs をベースに
改造したもの、つまりまさしく Debian 由来です。
さらに freeradius-dev のほうにも "freeradius BTS" のページに
ちゃんと debbugs と記載されています。

ちょっと面白いのが listar-support で、

「一般的」には BTS という略語で bug tracking system を示すという
慣例はどうも無さそうです。

さらに

出てきません。

 "Acronyms HIR" で調べると BTS = British Toxicology Society 
だったりしますし、SBF_Glossary で調べると

 www.google.com で "BTS" だけをキーワードにするとヒット数は
約 243,000 件。これには

オマケとして jitterbug だけで検索すると約44,200件もあったり
しますが、どうもこれにもソフトウェアとは無関係なものもかなり
含まれているみたいですね。

  Debian BTS "bug report" だと約3,350件
  jitterbug +"bug track" は約15件
  jitterbug "bug report" は約374件
  +BTS +"bug tracking" は約5,130件

略であることを明示している例が多いように思います。

メールの内容からも検索できるのですが、 egcs-bugs ML で検索すると
ヒットしたメールのほとんどが "forwarded from Debian BTS" だったり

最初の "Tracking System" は実際には "Distributed Defect Tracking System"
 (ClearDDTS) が改行で切り取られたものですが、Open Track (OT) は
 "tracking system used to manage defect reports and enhancement requests"
です。
他に "Problem Tracking System", "issue tracking system", "trouble tracking
 system", "bug and customer support tracking system", "problem reporting
 and tracking system" "problem tracking system", などの例があります。

こうしてみると、"tracking system" や "tracking tool" などの言葉のほうが
一般的で、"bug tracking system" はその中のバリエーションのひとつに過ぎない
という感じですね。

でわかるとおり、"problem report" のほうはバージョンの新しいほうでは
かなり減らされているものの、まだ bug tracking system よりずっと多いです。

さらに "problem report database" で調べると

となっていて、"the BTS" = "Debian BTS" という用法です。

その「GNATS の ML」で "problem report" をキーに検索してみてください。
きっと、はるかに多くの数がヒットするはずです。

 "bug tracking system" が通用するのは "tracking system" という言葉から
イメージするものが一般的だからで、いきなり "BTS" という略称だけを文脈
から切り離して提示しても通用するというのは、それほど一般的では無いように
思います。

そうですね。その意味で、Debian 関連の ML で使われる "BTS" という
用語は、やはり「Debian 固有の用語」なのだと思いました。多くの場合、
一般名詞としての「バグ追跡システム」ではなく、固有名詞としての
 "Debian Bug Tracking System" を意味する略称として "BTS" が使われて
いると思いますから。

言語学者ではありませんが、 debbugs-2.3/README には

                     DEBIAN BUG TRACKING SYSTEM
                     --------------------------

  This bug tracking system was developed by Ian Jackson from 1994-1997,
  with assistance from nCipher Corporation Limited in 1997.  nCipher allowed
  Ian to redistribute modifications he made to the system while working as an
  employee of nCipher.

とあります。いつ頃から実用に供されていたのかはわかりませんが、
 1994 年以降でしょうね。たぶん 1996 (Buzz リリースの頃) には
既に動いていたのではないでしょうか。

GNATS は 1993 に最初のリリースが出たようですので、順序から言うと
先でしょうが、"Bug Tracking System" ではなく、"Problem Report
 Management Database" と名乗っていたものと思います。

一般の bug tracking system については「自然に使われていた説明」
のほうが正しそうですが、"BTS" という略称の普及には debbugs の
影響がけっこうあるんじゃないかと推測しています。

また、"BTS" = "Debian Bug Tracking System" という用法については、
ほぼ確実に「Debian 固有」だと言って良いと思われます。
